  • Dividend and salary declarations
  • Payment reminders and planning

We also support capital gains, pension withdrawals, and other one-off events that may affect your personal tax.

Corporation Tax

We prepare and file corporation tax returns and year-end accounts for companies in line with HMRC requirements, accurately and efficiently. Alongside your filing, we’ll advise on timing, allowances, and profit extraction to help manage your company liability in a tax-efficient manner.

This includes:

  • Reviewing business expenses and capital allowances
  • Identifying legitimate profit reduction opportunities
  • Alongside preparation and submission of your company year-end accounts

  • Common input and output tax issues
  • Partial exemption and sector-specific cases

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a tax accountant and a regular accountant?

A tax accountant specialises in both corporate and personal taxation. This expertise comes from professional qualifications (from the ICAEW or ACCA), ongoing CPD, and years of demonstrable experience in tax departments. A regular accountant might handle a variety of general accounting services, from bookkeeping to payroll, but may not be trained specifically on navigating complex tax legislation or HMRC compliance requirements.

If you’re weighing up what a tax accountant actually offers versus a general accountant, we’ve written a fuller breakdown.

Do I need a tax accountant if I have a simple tax situation?

Even if your tax affairs are straightforward, it’s worth consulting a qualified tax accountant. They’ll ensure you’re fully compliant, identify all deductions you might unknowingly overlook, and help you prepare documentation that meets HMRC’s and lenders’ standards. This peace of mind saves time in the short term and potential stress later on when applying for finance or a mortgage.

How often should I meet with my tax accountant?

It depends on the complexity of your arrangements, your financial situation and your goals. At the very minimum, we recommend meeting once a year to review your tax position and plan ahead. More frequent check-ins, monthly, quarterly or biannually, provide maximum value, allowing you to make timely adjustments and take advantage of tax efficiencies as they arise.

What happens if HMRC opens an enquiry into my tax return?

HMRC can open an enquiry into any return, even a straightforward one, and it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. What matters is having accurate records and someone who understands the process on your side. We manage correspondence with HMRC on your behalf, make sure the right information is provided within their timeframes, and work through the enquiry to a resolution, so it doesn’t fall on you to interpret HMRC’s letters alone.

For a full walkthrough of what to expect, we’ve covered what happens at each stage of an HMRC tax investigation in more detail.

What happens if I miss the Self Assessment deadline?

Missing the 31 January deadline triggers an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax, with further charges building the longer it’s left. If you think you’re going to miss a deadline, or already have, get in touch as early as possible. We can often help reduce the impact, and get your return filed and your position back on track.

Our introductory guide to Self Assessment covers the full deadline calendar and what to have ready ahead of time.

At Octane Accountants, we're here to help, whenever you need us, helping you make informed decisions that align with your personal and business goals.
